Epson wireless printer won’t print or show ink levels anymore

I recently installed Windows 7 SP1 (service pack 1), and as a result my Epson NX515 wireless network printer wouldn’t print anymore from my desktop computer. Additionally, when I would go to the printer properties, it wouldn’t show the ink levels anymore. I could ping it, view the memory card storage, and view its built-in webpage, but I couldn’t print to it from my desktop. I tried reinstalling the drivers for it and also tried just about everything else that popped up in the results from my search engine queries.

Eventually I figured out how to get it working on my own. Here’s the scoop on how to fix it. Note that this fix is for if your printer drivers can see the printer, but for some reason when you try to print it give a print error or communication error (e.g., you get an error on the computer, and when you physically look at the printer it appears as though it did not receive any data).

First off, I noticed that the printer is listed in the “Devices and Printers” window (located in “Start (Windows logo) menu > Devices and Printers”, see image below), but that it doesn’t print anymore.

The first thing to do is to go to “Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center”. Then click on the link named “See full map” in the upper-right corner of the window (see image below to see where that link is located).

Right-click on the printer and select the name of the printer (it will be something similar to EPSON8604B0) and then select Install: “EPSON8604B0 > Install” (see image below). There are two entries that have the printer name when you right-click on it, but only one of those entries has the sub-entry called “Install” – so pick that one.

The computer will start “installing” this printer. After about 30 seconds or up to a couple minutes later, you will see the “new” printer listed back in the “Devices and Printers” window, with a little “waiting” clock on top of it (see below).

You will need to sit and wait for the software to finish installing before you do anything else. Just wait… and eventually it will tell you that it is done, the new printer listing will change its name to something like “EPSON8604B0” (whatever name you had selected in the network map), and the little “waiting” clock overlay will go away (see below).

Now that it’s done installing, you can set this printer as your default printer by right-clicking on it and selecting “Set as default printer” (see below). If this option isn’t available, then the software probably hasn’t finished installing yet and you need to wait longer.

Now that you have set your new printer as the default, you can remove the old printer from the list by right-clicking on it and selecting “Remove device” (see below).

The new printer is still listed but it has a funky name, so you might want to change its name. You can change its name by right-clicking on the new printer, selecting “Printer properties”, and changing the name in the window that pops up (see below). After you change the name, click “OK”.

Now you’re all done! The new printer has been added and you can now print to it and see the printer ink levels, too.
